Visa in India
When you are travelling from Canada to India you will need to obtain a visa. You can do this via the Embassy of India in your region. The visa is usually valid for six months. Keep in mind that your passport should be valid for an additional half year after your arrival in your new home country. If you wish to visit conferences or attend meetings, you will need to obtain a business visa. This type of visa is usually issued for a period extending from 3 months up to 5 years and permits you multiple entries. With a business visa you are not allowed to work. If you are planning to work, then you need to apply for work permit.
Work permit
A work permit is usually valid for a period of one to two years. However, if you have a longer contract period, then you can extend the permit period also. Your work permit relates to your work, so if you change or modify anything then you should obtain a new one. The documents you need to apply for a work permit include the following:
- Valid passport (should be valid for at least six months);
- Proof of employee, which includes contract, an appointment letter, applicant's resume, proof of organization registration in India, etc.;
- Work permit application form;
- Two passport size photographs;
- Work permit fee.
Driving license in India
Whilst you may choose to take your car with you, you will likely find cars much cheaper in India. You can also opt to pay for a taxi service which will likely save you a lot of money if you do not need a car for everyday travelling.
If you still wish to drive a car yourself, then you should obtain the Indian driving permit. You can apply for driving permit at Regional Transport Office (RTO). You first need to apply for Learner's Licence. You will need to provide a proof of your residence permit and of your age, medical declaration, passport-sized photos and the required fee when you apply. You can switch your driving licence to a Permanent one after one month of having your your Learners’s permit.
